How can tourism become a meaningful force for ocean conservation instead of simply existing alongside it?
That question sparked the idea behind Bright Ocean Tourism, a proposed initiative that aims to connect resorts, ocean conservation nonprofits, and travelers through impactful, conservation-focused experiences. While the program is still in its research and development phase, significant work has already gone into exploring how this vision could become a reality.
Leading this work is Madison Stapley, a Business student at Lakehead University in Canada. Madison first joined Bright Ocean Marketing over a year ago as a volunteer, supporting the team with marketing and administrative projects. As Bright Ocean continued to grow its mission of helping ocean-positive businesses tell their stories, Madison took on the role of Marketing specialist to pursue a new opportunity: combining tourism with conservation to create meaningful experiences that benefit both visitors and the organizations working to protect the ocean.
A few months ago, Madison developed a comprehensive business plan for Bright Ocean Tourism, laying the foundation for what the program could become. The business plan outlines a tourism model that connects environmentally conscious travelers with local conservation organizations through meaningful, hands-on experiences. It also explores how resorts, nonprofits, and local communities could collaborate to create experiences that benefit both visitors and marine conservation efforts.
The plan includes market research, implementation strategies, and long-term growth opportunities to ensure the concept is both impactful and sustainable. Since then, she has been leading the research and development process, focusing on understanding the needs of the organizations that would make the program successful. So far, we've found that the primary challenges facing ocean conservation groups are securing adequate funding and attracting enough people to support their initiatives.
Rather than making assumptions, Bright Ocean Marketing has been taking a customer-first approach. Through customer discovery calls with ocean conservation nonprofits, resorts, and excursion companies, the team has been gathering valuable insights into existing challenges, partnership opportunities, and what meaningful conservation tourism should look like. These conversations have been instrumental in shaping the direction of the proposed program.
As part of this process, Bright Ocean Marketing has also begun building relationships with organizations already making a difference, including the Antigua and Barbuda Ocean Foundation (ABOT), AnuBlue, and EAG Antigua. Learning directly from nonprofits helps ensure that any future tourism experiences are designed to genuinely support conservation efforts while creating educational and memorable opportunities for travelers. Madison will be in Antigua full time and will continue leading the development of this eco-tourism program on the island.
The vision behind Bright Ocean Tourism extends beyond simply offering another excursion. Instead, the goal is to develop experiences that connect visitors with the people and organizations protecting the ocean every day. Whether through educational programs, conservation activities, or community-led initiatives, every potential partnership is being explored with long-term positive environmental impact in mind.
As the concept continues to evolve, Bright Ocean Marketing will continue doing what it does best—helping ocean-positive organizations share their stories through strategic marketing—while Bright Ocean Tourism aims to coordinate partnerships that transform those stories into real-world experiences for travelers.
Every conversation, research project, and new partnership brings Bright Ocean Tourism one step closer to creating a model where tourism and conservation can grow together.
